How Crude Oil Prices Affect Petrol Prices in Pakistan
Pakistan imports most of the oil it uses, so a move in the international crude oil price reaches Pakistani pumps within days. Here is the path from the oil market to your fuel tank:
Crude & products
Brent and Middle East crude set the cost of refined petrol and diesel traded in the Gulf and Singapore.
Dollar rate
Fuel is bought in US dollars, so a weaker rupee raises the cost even if oil stays flat.
OGRA formula
OGRA uses a rolling 7-day average of international prices and revises rates daily.
Levies & margins
Petroleum levy, freight, OMC and dealer margins are added to reach the pump price.
How much of today’s petrol price is crude?
One litre of Brent crude costs about Rs β today. Petrol at the pump is Rs β per litre. The rest covers refining, freight, the petroleum levy, and company and dealer margins. See the live petrol price in Pakistan for today’s full rate.
Brent vs WTI and Other Crude Oil Benchmarks
There is no single “oil price”. Traders use a few benchmark crudes to price the rest of the world’s oil. These are the ones that matter most for Pakistan:
| Benchmark | Origin & Exchange | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Brent | North Sea Β· ICE Futures Europe | The main global benchmark. Most of the world’s internationally traded oil is priced against it, and it is the headline price in Pakistani news. |
| WTI | US (Cushing, Oklahoma) Β· NYMEX | The US benchmark. Light and sweet, usually trading a few dollars below Brent because it is landlocked and shipped from the US. |
| Dubai / Oman | Middle East Β· Platts, Dubai Mercantile Exchange | The reference for Middle Eastern crude sold to Asia, which is where most of Pakistan’s crude comes from. |
| Arab Light | Saudi Arabia Β· Aramco official selling price | Saudi Aramco sets its monthly price for Asian buyers against Dubai/Oman. Important for Pakistani refiners buying Saudi crude. |
| Murban | UAE (Abu Dhabi) Β· ICE Futures Abu Dhabi | A light Gulf crude with its own futures contract, widely used in Asian supply deals. |
Why is Brent usually more expensive than WTI?
Both are high-quality light, sweet crudes. WTI is priced inland in the US, so it has to be moved to the coast before it can be exported, while Brent is waterborne and loads straight onto tankers. That transport difference, plus regional supply and demand, is why the BrentβWTI spread is usually a few dollars per barrel. A widening spread often signals tighter supply outside the US.
What Moves the Crude Oil Price?
OPEC+ Output Decisions
When OPEC+ members such as Saudi Arabia and Russia cut or raise production, supply changes and prices react, often within minutes of an announcement.
Geopolitics & Hormuz
A large share of the world’s seaborne oil passes through the Strait of Hormuz. Any threat to that route adds a risk premium, as the 2026 crisis showed.
Global Demand
Economic growth in China, India and the US drives demand for fuel. Slowdowns pull prices down; strong growth pushes them up.
US Inventories
The weekly US crude stock report from the EIA moves prices. A bigger-than-expected draw usually lifts them; a build usually lowers them.
The US Dollar
Oil is priced in dollars. A stronger dollar makes oil dearer for other countries, which can weigh on demand and prices.
Interest Rates & Markets
Rate decisions and investor risk appetite shift money in and out of commodities, adding short-term swings to prices.

Brent comes from the North Sea and trades on ICE; it is the main global benchmark. WTI is US crude priced at Cushing, Oklahoma and trades on NYMEX. Both are light and sweet. Brent usually trades a few dollars higher, and today the spread is $ β.
Pakistan’s petrol and diesel prices are not set directly from Brent. OGRA uses international prices of refined products (Platts) averaged over 7 days. Pakistani refineries mostly buy Middle Eastern crude priced against Arab Light, Dubai/Oman and Murban. Brent is the best quick guide to where all of these are heading.
Under the daily pricing system, OGRA revises petrol and diesel prices every day using a rolling 7-day average of international prices. A move in crude therefore feeds into pump prices gradually over about a week, alongside changes in the dollar rate and the petroleum levy.
Oil has been traded in US dollars for decades, and the main futures markets (ICE and NYMEX) quote in dollars. That is why the dollar rate in Pakistan matters as much as the oil price itself for what Pakistanis pay.
The long-standing reference high is about $147.50 for Brent, reached intraday in July 2008. The highest close in our own dataset is shown in the 52-week range table above. At the other extreme, WTI futures briefly settled below zero in April 2020 when storage ran out.
OPEC+ is the group of OPEC members, led by Saudi Arabia, plus allies such as Russia. It agrees production targets for its members. Cuts tighten supply and tend to lift prices; increases do the opposite. Its meetings are among the biggest scheduled events for the oil market.
